There has been a break in transmission. White noise and static. Normal service is to be resumed.
Much has happened: work trips away, a birthday and lots of thinking.
Turning 27 made me assess a lot of things in my life. It’s easy to think I’m in control of certain situations when really I’m in limbo. Easy to think friends will grow and move in the same directions as me, when often they don’t. Easy to assume my goals are the same now as when I was 18. It doesn’t feel like nine years have passed since I moved to the big city to kickstart the big music career I always wanted but they have, and while it’s been a mostly great experience and an action packed rollercoaster of an almost-decade, there’s a lot to get in order.
But to the present…and I’ve had a very interesting day. Lately I’ve been frequenting The Tuttle Club more and more as I build up relationships with new friends and cement older friendships (all awesome), and I’m always pleased by the conversations I end up having with people. Social media is a great leveller and I love being able to strike up a conversation with big and little fish alike, never having to worry whether what I can offer them will be good enough (either conversationally or, potentially, workwise), whether I’m too young, too female, too red of hair…
Today Toby facilitated a discussion about social media and the space that the sort of people who go to the Tuttle occupy in the business world. I like the analogy that we’re prospectors sailing the ocean strong and independent, zigzagging between islands (businesses) and connecting them up through what we do. And I love that we’re putting all this stuff in to words. I’m inspired by the incredibly bright, prolific people I’ve met through it: sizemore, londonfilmgeek, Steve Lawson, lobeliasabo, Documentally, whatleydude, Joshua March and the aforementioned Toby to name just a few.
What is social media to me? It’s the way I do most of my communication. It’s a creative outlet, a way of keeping track of what I’m doing, a way of developing fledgling friendships. It shows me there are other people out there doing some of the same things I am, it leads me to their work so I can get inspired and sometimes it puts me in touch with people I can work with. The world’s a lonely place and London can be unfriendly, but social media allows me to set up an outpost and send messages out, red flags in a map, buoys in a barren sea.
I am here. I exist. I create. Talk to me.

It was truly inspirational meeting you yesterday and thank You for the conversation.
Great blog post, great summery of the day and I especially like the point that you are losing track of your age. So often our age is used against us to place limitations or to pigeonhole. Sometimes we should set ourselves adrift and ‘go with the flow’ once in a while.
Letting go is a good thing. Of fears, of expectations, of baggage.. It frees us up for the journey ahead.
Good luck with yours.

I agree with the way you are looking at social networks- It is a way to meet people without worrying about what you bring to the table. Don’t worry about being 27 too much. It will be over in a year!
