what have you done today to make you feel proud? :::

By warriorgrrl | March 25, 2008

In the name of bringing home a buck, I’ve spent quite a bit of time today on hold with German companies waiting to have slightly confusing conversations using my charm and a limited vocabulary. What can you say when the answer to your polite “Sprechen sie Englisch?” is “Nein”? Not knowing how to say “Oh never mind, sorry to bother you, bye bye then” my standard response has been a slightly nervous “Ah, danke, tuss”. German is THE language I want to learn right now, can anyone help?

German hold music is a strange beast. Veering between the maniacally plinky-plonky and disturbingly twee romantic pop, it makes those moments gearing up for the next conversation far more tense and unpleasant than they need to be. The icing on the cake was my last call, where I was forced to endure the nasal twangings of M People’s “Proud”. Where did the UK’s obsession with that band come from? And what are they doing now? I saw Heather Small a couple of summers ago backstage at Party In The Park in Leeds and will never forget the sight and sound of her and Chico (another national favourite we should all be ‘proud’ of) belting out warmup exercises in adjoining changing tents. Surreal stuff.

Is anyone else having a weird day at work?
